The financial year 2011 was characterised by extreme disruptions in the currency markets, strong dynamic growth in the first half-year, and a perceptible decrease in demand in the second term, especially in the solar market and Chinese railway business. Following a weaker start, Fiber Optic applications showed an increasingly positive trend during the course of the year.

Realm Energy/JSR Sdn Bhd (RESB) awarded HUBER+SUHNER to design, supply, install, test and commission the fiber optic part of its Broadband Powerline (BPL) Project. The project intends to bring broadband internet connections at an affordable price to more than two million Malaysian households. The BPL technology uses existing power lines to transmit the signal over the last mile at data rates of up to 16 megabit per second. The Malaysian BPL project is one of the largest of its kind in the world.
In August 2008, STADLER was commissioned to supply fifty low-floor trainsets belonging to the FLIRT family for the Norwegian State Railways (NSB). The trainsets are in a 5-part design and each features three drive units. Twenty-six of the low-floor trainsets are destined for operation in the greater Oslo area and the remaining twenty-four formations are being deployed for medium-range routes in southern Norway. An additional option for one hundred further trains is under consideration.
